A Pune Woman Skydives Wearing A Saree And You’re Worried About Your Makeup?

Another first for the adventurous skydiver Shital Mahajan, as this daredevil Pune woman skydives wearing a saree from 13000 feet. A pioneer for women in thrilling adventure sports, Shital talks about her journey, profession, inspiration, and life goals.

With a penchant for breaking records both in India and abroad, Shital Mahajan has just added yet another first to her list of world records. Her daring attitude and ability to push the envelope for women in adventure sports took her to Thailand, where she did a skydive from 13,000 feet wearing a traditional Marathi Nauvari saree.

Skydiving

For someone who grew up with a passion of leaving an indelible mark on the society, Shital has come a long way from being just another face in the crowd to someone who has six world records and 17 national records to her name.

As a trendsetter who has truly conquered the sky by becoming the first woman to parachute jump over both the North and South poles, Shital continues to find unique ways to etch her name into history.

The inspiration behind this idea

Professional Skydiver

The 35-year old high flyer wanted to dedicate a record to his traditional Maharashtrian roots, and just then she got an idea of doing a skydive in Thailand in a Nauvari saree.

In an interview with Pune Mirror, Shital said:

“I have dedicated all my earlier records to India as I say I am India’s daughter, so this time I wanted to do something for the Marathi community, being a Marathi mulgi, I wanted to do something different for Pune and our community. Recently, we also had Marathi week celebration in January first week, ever since then I was wondering no one has ever done this stunt wearing a saree so I got the idea that I can do it wearing nauvari saree which is tucked both in front and back.”

A fearless feat achieved by yet another woman showing that with her will and determination to a leave a mark, she can make a real impact on the society. We would encourage you to share such inspirational stories of women who’ve pushed themselves to the limit and made a beautiful contribution to the society.

See How This Delhi Couple Is Exploring India With Their Dogs

Delhi based couple, Divya Dugar and her husband are no ordinary travelers. They believe everything nice in this world should be shared with their most faithful companions – their pet dogs, Tigress and Marcopolo, and that means just like them, the pets get to travel A LOT too!

Tigress and Pondi were Divya’s office dogs but once the office shut down, they were on road and Divya just couldn’t see that. She adopted both the pups and decided to take care of them in the best possible manner. Unfortunately, Pondi passed away last year leaving her pup Marcopolo behind and that is when Divya and her husband decided to travel across India with their two faithful friends. The couple wanted to see how it feels like traveling with a family and also wanted to raise awareness about rescuing and adopting Indian dogs.

A post shared by Divya (@dugardd) on

Based on their experiences, Divya believes India is not one of the most pet friendly countries in the world, however, that didn’t deter them from taking their dogs wherever they wanted. Yes, there were many challenges on the way but sometimes things also went way more smoothly than expected.

There were people who laughed at us and refused a cab ride when they didn’t want dog hair on their car seats but there were also a lot more people who were friendly and came forward to help us with smiles on their faces.

She also thanks Indian railways who proved to be a great help when it came to a train journey with her dogs. Their trip from Delhi to Madgaon of 32 hours was a huge success and the dogs loved spending their time looking out of the moving train while enjoying their treats. They did, however, prepare well before traveling on the train and took all the necessary meals, medicines and even made a list of stops for toilet breaks.

A post shared by Divya (@dugardd) on

According to the couple, Goa is one of the best places for traveling with your pets for it has a variety of accommodation options as per your budget and a lot more pet friendly places to chill at.

Currently working on a travel guide for hotels and best experiences for pet parents, this Delhi couple exploring India with their dogs no longer believes in following a particular recommendation or a list but instead feels it is all about perspective and charting your way through the country with your best buddies. Oh and yes, their Instagram account is LIT with their pet travel pictures! Go check them out.

This 4-Year Old’s Adorable ‘Trip To The Moon’ Proves That Wishes Do Come True!

He may be tiny, but he has successfully completed a ‘mission to the moon‘, something that we spend our lives only dreaming about! All within the confines of the Adelaide Airport in Australia, 4-year old Dwayne Frankie has been granted his lifelong wish of going to the moon!

dwayne space suit

Frankie has epilepsy and has spent most of his young life in hospital, battling uncontrollable seizures almost every day. But that had never diminished his yearning of going into outer-space. And just a day ago, the collaborative efforts of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Qantas allowed the little adventurer to complete his intrepid voyage to ‘space’, bringing the toddler boundless joy!

Flanked by Star Wars Stormtroopers and accompanied by Batman, Spiderman, and some aliens, a space-suit clad Dwayne hopped through the airport to his first destination – Mission Control at the Qantas Club – as cameras and family members tailed behind him.

At the ‘Mission Control’, a crew of Qantas ‘astronauts‘ awaited him. They invited him into a hangar that had been transformed into an intergalactic wonderland, complete with moon rocks.

An ecstatic Frankie completed his mission by planting on the moon’s surface a cute hand-painted flag that said ‘Dwayne On The Moon‘.

It was a dream come true for the little guy (and his parents) who had forever longed for an adventure outside hospital walls. “You see his worst…to see him with a smile is awesome. You can’t describe it, it’s just great,” said his father, Philip.

Describing their son’s special day as “phenomenal“, his mother said that her boy had the time of his life on his mission to the moon.

Dwayne is absolutely elated after the experience. He looked at the moon early this morning and said ‘I went there last night!’,” she told the Press later. “It has been the most wonderful experience and our family will be forever grateful to Make-A-Wish and Qantas for making our little boy’s dream come true.”

Scheveningen Is Celebrating 200 Years With A Year Long Beach Party

Scheveningen is celebrating 200 years with a year long beach party!

Imagine the joy when anyone celebrates 100 years of anything and now double the fun for that is exactly how the Dutch seaside resort of Scheveningen is celebrating its 200 years. It is going all in to mark the special occasion with a year long celebration that includes some of the most prominent events, cultural extravaganzas and even a full blown boat race thriller.

The resort which started with a wooden structure containing just four bathtubs, soon transformed into the Netherlands’s first seaside resort – and a mighty one at that. For the resort, its long beach and the village is one of the eight districts of the Hague and attracts almost 9 million people a year. It is dotted with cafes and exciting venues – making it one of the most happening places to chill.

Scheveningen beach

The year long beach party started with around 10000 people from the Hague who took part in a sub-zero swim during the annual New Year Dive and braved the cold waters to mark the occasion.

Other events that would follow this include “Rings Beside The Sea” which is a vast land art project measuring a whopping 150 x 300 meters in the golden sands. Apart from this, there is Sand Sculpting Championships in the month of June where 11 large sand artworks would be made. In August, there is an amazing International Fireworks Festival and it would be followed by the world’s biggest motocross beach race, the Red Bull Knockout, in November.

Scheveningen beach resort celebrations

Scheveningen will also be the finish line for the Volvo Ocean Race, which has 65 boats fighting through high winds and crashing waves and covering 46000 nautical miles over a period of nine months. Musically, the beach is also hosting a number of events like BonFire Beach Fest in April, a live performance of fisherman’s opera Hard Hands in September, and a weekend that would play Latin and Caribbean music at the Tropical Valentine Festival in February. And to please the art lovers, there are a number of art exhibitions showcasing stuff that would wow your senses.

Apart from the above, the beach would be buzzing with hyper local events through the year – all year long – making it one of the best places to travel in 2018.

Scheveningen beach resort

So what are you waiting for? Book a holiday to this paradise for a once in a lifetime experience that would perhaps be repeated only after another 100 years! Yep.

Ola Begins Its Water Taxi Service From Guwahati Airport To The Main City

Ola boat service is now a reality. The cab hailing app in alliance with the Assam Government began testing the boat service from the Guwahati airport to the main city via the Brahmaputra River Channel on February 7 and so far the results are very promising. And if all goes well in the future too, Ola will make the service public after a week.

It is worth noting that this high speed water taxi service would reduce the average time taken from the Guwahati airport to the main city by 45 minutes from one hour by road to 15 minutes by water taxi. Ola boat can cover as much as 15 km in 15 minutes.

ola boat service in guwahati

To facilitate the service, a jetty is built near the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati airport) from which the boats would run till the the jetty in the main city. The water taxi has a capacity of 15-20 people and would be machine operated. These high speed taxis would run from Lachit Ghat, Machkhowa to North Guwahati and would drastically reduce the commute timing from 45 (by road) minutes to 2-5 minutes.

If the pilot run proves to be successful, the government would consider expanding the service and prioritizing the water taxi commute even more. This would be not only beneficial for the economy and development but would also be a sigh of relief for people who would have otherwise taken the road and spent hours commuting from one place to another via road.

This Is The Happiest Country On Earth According To The World Happiness Report 2018

Eager to find out if yours made it to the list? Well, here we go:

Every year, UN’s World Happiness Report ranks 156 countries based on the collective levels of happiness of the people who live in them. Published by the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network, this report takes into account factors such as life expectancy, equality, social support, and a few more. This year, the report has also taken into account and measured the well-being of the country’s citizens and residents.

finland sleigh dogs

Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for 2018, pushing 2017’s winner – Norway – into second place.

Nordic nations have almost always scored high on this report in the past, and history has repeated itself this year as well! Other Nordic nations falling in the top 10 on this list include Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. While Norway got pushed to the second position, the U.S. fell from the 14th to the 18th place this year.

The view of striking Northern Lights from the Glass Igloos in Finland

Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute based in Copenhagen said that Nordic nations like Finland are “doing something right in terms of creating good conditions for good lives and are good at converting wealth into well-being” despite having to pay some of the highest taxes in the world.

John Helliwell, a co-editor working with the World Happiness Report says that while these countries have fewer immigrants than other nations like the U.S., the people who immigrate to happier countries are in turn often happier as well. “The most striking finding of the report is the remarkable consistency between the happiness of immigrants and the locally born,” he said.

3 Girls, INR 3000 And One Wonderful Trip To McLeod Ganj! #HacksIncluded

An Honest Confession: We were 3 rookies with super low budget, planning a last minute trip to McLeod Ganj. Besides, it was the the time of a long weekend when all of Delhi heads for the hills. Chances of success- scarce.

But we weren’t about to let go of the idea that popped in our heads. It was one of those once-in-a-long-time impromptu plans that fills your heart with excitement. In spite of having to consider the above mentioned hurdles and the safety of a girls only outing, we did manage to pull off a refreshing and well managed trip.

Go ahead and find out how we did it, so that the next time you’re in a fix you can use one of these hacks:

Total Budget per person: INR 3,000/-
Duration:  1 Night / 2 Days

Mcleodganj landscape picture

Let the exciting journey begin!

The first 15 minutes of my mundane life are spent staring at the hills (on my laptop) every single day. Being a workaholic, a break seemed almost impossible until one fine day I just decided to follow my heart.

All pumped up and set for the trip, I roped in 2 more friends and that’s when the HPTDC website flashed – no tickets available! What followed was one scary thought – I won’t find a room either. But that was no match for my enthusiasm. The will to ‘just go’ forced me to find an alternatives!

How we booked last minute tickets to Himachal when HPTDC buses had no seats for us

One of the perks of working in a travel firm was getting leeway on 11th hour (or 59th minute, to be more precise) travel planning. Go bug your colleague a little and Voila! The next thing I know, we were on a surprisingly comfortable journey to McLeodganj.
Round Trip Cost: 1,800/- per person
Amount Left: 1,100/- per person
Hack: Contact Travel Agents in such situations
Tip: HPTDC buses are cheaper. If you plan in advance, you can save!

Traveler friends to the rescue: Even at this peak time, we found us a cozy room and our worst nightmare was over!

Shiva cafe and Guest House in Mcleod Ganj

Always keep your resourceful traveler friends close.

Getting in touch with a few of our traveler friends, we discovered this quaint place to stay called Shanti Café and Guest House owned by John, an avid traveler and tour guide. He managed to get us a room at his place on a very short notice and saved the day!
Cost: INR 900/- per night (300 per person)
Spent: INR 2,100/- per person
Left: INR 900/- per person
Hack: Always keep your resourceful traveler friends closer!

Day 1: Mind you, we went to chill & relax, not to exert. And our trip was just about that!

Stop 1: Food. Views. Weather.

A sudden jerk woke us up to the dazzling sights. Our bus twirled around the winding roads, following the meandering Beas river full-of-pebbles and the sky in hues of gold and mauve. Our bus came to a halt! The weather was just right. We couldn’t have asked for more! We reached Mcleodganj, checked into the cozy rooms (just 5 minutes away from the bus stand), freshened up & ordered some delectable breakfast!
What we ate: Omelettes & Coffee!
Cost: INR 50/- per person
Spent: INR 2,150/- per person
Left: INR 850/-

Stop 2: Next, we decided to chill at Shiva Café enroute Bhagsu falls.

Shiva Cafe in Mcleodganj

We walked our way to the famous waterfall. It’s a tiny hill station and you don’t need to get on wheels.

We spent our day beside the waterfall, away from the tourist jazz. Walking uphill can be taxing was but trust me, the tranquility up there was worth all the trouble! Once we reached the top, we knew why the place is so damn popular. It’s a lovely laidback café with the waterfall gushing by its side. And oh, it’s a pot head’s paradise! 😉
What we ate: Maggi, Hash browns & Cold coffee
Cost: 120 per person
Spent: 2270 per person
Left: 730/-

Stop 3: Woeser Bakery & it’s Coconut Paradise!

The entry to Woeser's Bakery in Mcleodganj

A local we befriended on our way to Mcleodganj had recommended this bakery. While it looks like any other cafe, the delectable options it serves left us wanting for more! Variety (to the power infinity) of teas, mouth watering cookies & brownies, freshly brewed cappuccino – I bet you won’t find coffee like this any where else!
What we had? Cinnamon Tea, freshly brewed cappuccino & Coconut Paradise Cookie
Cost: 130 per person
Spent: 2400 per person
Left: 600/-
Tip: Do not return without trying the freshly brewed Cappuccino & Coconut Paradise Cookies

Stop 5: What’s a trip to the hills without a night spent gazing at the sky?

A fantastic view of the starry night from our guest house's patio

The tiny little lawn, a lantern, one old monk, a few glasses, the creepy sound amidst the pine trees – our little patio of Shanti Cafe. No network, no light, just a few random old numbers playing on the ipod – that’s all we desired – to be cut off from the external world  & to dwell in our thoughts under the star lit sky with a cool breeze flowing through our hair amidst the wild.
What we ate? Dal, Roti & some Chakhna
Cost: 120 per person
Spent: 2520 per person
Left: 480/-
Tip: John can help you arrange some liquor, if in case you want it!

Day 2: The un-visited village & the hail storm

Heap of chocolate pancakes

A way through the woods from the cafe led us to Dharamkot. We had until 5 in our hand to take a quick walk to the village & be back to the cafe for some Kahwa Chai (yes, in Himachal) & chocolate pancakes – they were yummy, especially for the price we paid.
Breakfast: Pancakes, Chai & Cheese Sandwich
Cost: 100 per person
Spent: 2620 per person
Left: 380/-

So, all geared up, we stepped out, only to return.

So, all geared up, we stepped out, only to return.

It was near 12 already and we only had a few hours left now. We couldn’t just stand there in the shed and wait for the rain to stop. So, we finally walked back to Shanti Cafe which looked totally different now. The hailstones falling in the lawn, the trees swaying in the cold breeze, the drizzle soaking our faces & the smell of delicious food – it was our tiny little utopia! Yeah, we ended up spending the rest of the hours in the cafe hogging on every yummy morsel available – cheese french fries, pancakes, momos, coffee and lemon ginger tea.

Cost: 190 per person
Spent: 2810 per person
Left: 190/-

Though this was the quickest break we took our guest house made it all the more special for us! And did we mention it was an absolutely safe all girls trip?!

So, come on girls, you now know that a limited budget, safety issues or ticket unavailability can’t stop you from taking a break. Head out and go for that long overdue break!
